3D-printed cities: is this the future?

The words "we print architecture's future" adorn the wall of a showroom on the outskirts of Suzhou, a rapidly urbanising city in eastern China. Arranged around the room are samples of odd-looking concrete wall of varying thickness. Outside, across the car park of this otherwise unremarkable industrial estate, is a grand, neoclassical mansion that recently became a global internet sensation . It is the world's first 3D-printed villa.

Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing - the process of fabricating solid objects from digital models - has been around for three decades. Talk of how this technology could transform both the construction industry and the way we conceive of and build cities has long circulated, too. With 3D printing, customisable "dream" homes would no longer be the purview of the rich, and architects would be able to create fantastically complex geometrical structures. In the developing world, low-income housing could be erected en masse, while speedily printed structures would provide disaster relief or temporary homes for refugees.

But until recently such talk was largely theoretical. Then in March 2014, the little-known Chinese company Winsun announced it had 3D-printed 10

Stephen Fry Lives Out Married Life on Twitter

February 27, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-01-22 at 10.08.33Although the unconventional couple have encouraged many to pass comment on the age gap between Stephen Fry (57) and partner and Elliot Spencer (27), it seems that they are getting along with married life just fine, posting a series of intimate images and tweets.

This is what we love about Twitter, with the social platform giving us access to our beloved stars. Where many years ago we felt very much detached from such celebrities we are now provided with a window, seeing directly into their personal lives.

Marrying just 10 days after announcing their engagement the couple understandably wanted to share every moment with their followers, ensuring we were not left out of anything during this incredible juncture in their lives.

It seems that Twitter has played a big part in the couples relationship, with Stephen Fry in particular giving us a step-by-step update of their life as a married couple. Moments after the ceremony Fry tweeted the following:

Screen Shot 2015-01-22 at 10.08.57

"Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. If you've been to a party or wedding where there was a party photo booth then you'll realise how popular, and even addictive the booth can be with the guests. If you haven’t seen one before don't worry, a booth at your event adds something completely original and special to the day and the photographs that are produced can be enjoyed for many years to come. If you are organising a special party or wedding any time soon clicking on the following link will get you a heap of useful information on Cornwall Wedding Photo Booth Hire.Amazing."

Although very sweet we wonder how Elliot felt about Stephen being on his phone during the reception. The star also tweeted an image of the two signing the marriage certificate, accompanied by a doll of Oscar Wilde. With Fry having such an affinity with Wilde and his troubles as a gay man we felt the unusual witness to be a great touch.

The couple were congratulated by thousands over Twitter, with many famous faces illustrating their happiness for the QI quizmaster.

What do you think, were the series of tweets a bit too much?
